Week 1- Open

Hi guys! For the first week of my nutrition blog I am going to be discussing healthy substitutes for salty and sweet cravings.  A lot of people get food cravings late at night when they’re doing homework or watching TV. It is easy to satisfy these cravings in a healthier way if you have the right knowledge.

The first craving we are going to discuss is when you are craving something salty to snack on. A lot go people’s favourite salty snack is a bag a chips, but most brands of chips are not good for you. For example, per 11 Dorito chips there is 210mg of sodium which is 9% of your daily sodium intake. That is a lot of sodium for such a small amount of food. A good substitute for chips is stove top popcorn.  Now don’t go thinking that all popcorn is a healthy snack because that’s not true. Microwavable popcorn and movie theatre popcorn is extremely bad for you! It may be easier to make but it’s not worth it considering how much worse it is for you. I am going to compare microwavable popcorn with stove top popcorn in a future blog, so be excited for that. Down below I have attached a link to a healthy stove top popcorn recipe.

Now what do we want when we are craving something sweet? A common favourite sweet snack is a fruit pie, the flavours can vary from apple, strawberry, peach and many more. Most people know that pie is not very good for you because of all the ingredients that go into making it (especially if its store bought).  For example for a store bought apple pie per 111 grams, your total fat content is 10.0 grams which is 15% of your daily fat intake. That is not something you want to eat very often, or ever. A healthy alternative to a fruit pie is brown sugar grilled pineapple. With brown sugar grilled pineapple you still get the fruity and sweet flavour you are craving, but you don’t get all of the extra ingredients. With the recipe I found there is only 3 ingredients; pineapple, brown sugar, and butter! Below I have attached the recipe so you can try it out for yourself.

Those are the substitutes I have found for a sweet and salty craving. In a future blog I am going to try out these recipes for myself to see if I enjoy them and how long it takes to make. Remember, there is always a healthier alternative to what you are craving. I hope you enjoyed my first nutrition blog.
